CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION

Q1. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCTS REPRESENT

SOCIAL  GROUPS OR ISSUE?

Music is a powerful medium that can capture a sentiment or circumstance, and for the A2 coursework assignment, a music video was chosen to represent a societal issue. The issue that was selected was depression, which is a common and debilitating mental illness that affects millions of people worldwide. To depict the issue, the song "Broken" by Jonah Kaegan was chosen. The music video portrays a young teen guy sitting alone in an empty room, expressing his feelings through his voice and facial gestures.

The use of pop music for the music video was intentional, as it is one of the most well-known genres and has a formula that is present in nearly all hit songs. The formula includes simple and catchy tunes with a solid rhythm, often featuring two or more verses and a recurring chorus. This formula has made pop music a popular choice for conveying important messages, such as the issue of depression.
In order to make the music video effective in representing the issue, research was conducted on depression. The results of the research were used to ensure that the video was accurate in its representation of the issue. The audience's preferences for codes and conventions were also taken into account, with camera angles being the main area of interest. This information was used to make sure that the music video quickly grabbed the audience's attention and effectively conveyed the message.

For our A2 coursework assignment, we decided to create a music video that addresses the important social issue of depression. In order to ensure that our video would resonate with our audience, we actively engaged with them throughout the creative process. We began by creating a Google form that asked our audience a series of questions about their music video preferences, their demographic information, and their opinions on mental health as a social issue. We made sure to ask questions that were relevant to our video, such as whether our audience would be interested in a performance-based music video and whether they believed depression was a growing issue in Pakistan.Once we had finalised the questions, we organised them in a Google doc and shared the form with our friends, family, and acquaintances, asking them to share it with their own networks to ensure a diverse range of responses. By using this approach, we were able to receive valuable feedback from a broad range of people, which helped us create a music video that resonated with our target audience.Furthermore, we made sure to incorporate elements that we knew our audience would find engaging. Based on the feedback we received, we chose the pop genre for our music video and made sure to include a range of camera angles and magazine conventions that we knew would capture their attention. We also chose a popular song, "Broken" by Jonah Kaegan, which we believed would be familiar to our audience and help them connect with the emotions depicted in the video.Overall, we believe that our music video was successful in engaging with our audience, both in terms of the feedback we received during the creative process and the final product itself. By actively seeking out and incorporating our audience's preferences and opinions, we were able to create a video that resonated with them on a personal level, while also addressing an important social issue.Aside from following conventions, we also aimed to engage with our audience in a variety of ways. One of the ways we did this was by conducting market research through a Google Form. We asked questions about the audience's preferences for music video genres, magazine conventions, and their interest in watching a music video focused on the social issue of mental health. This helped us to tailor our music video to the interests and preferences of our target audience.
In addition, we also incorporated visual and auditory elements that we believed would capture the audience's attention and keep them engaged. For instance, we carefully selected the song we used for our music video - "Broken" by Jonah Kaegan - because we felt that its lyrics and melody effectively conveyed the message we wanted to share with our audience. We also included visually striking elements, such as a stark and empty room, to convey the isolation and loneliness often experienced by individuals with depression.
